Acute toxicity of crude oil from NNPC and artisanal refineries in Niger Delta on selected aquatic biota

چکیده
The spill of Crude oil from artisanal refineries and government owned pipelines has become recurrent situation in the Niger Delta, leading to devastating effects on aquatic ecosystem. toxicity NNPC (Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation) refinery selected Bolo, Twon-Brass Ekpemu Delta were investigated. physicochemical properties products short fall standards for refineries, as they contained impurities. was tested using three representatives different trophic levels habitat; Fish (Tilapia guineensis), Crusteceans (Paleamonetes africanus), Moluscs (Tympanotomus fuscatus). LC50, NOEC, LOEC, TUa indices used assessment crude test organisms. study revealed that all samples toxic degree showed following trend; (LC50 – 0.02ppt)> 0.06ppt)> Bolo 0.11ppt)> 4.63ppt), while sensitivity was; Tilapia guineensis > Paleamonetes africanus Tympanotonus fuscatus. findings further emphasize need control spillage into

Supply and Demand Planning for Crude Oil Procurement in Refineries
The upstream petroleum supply chain is inefficient and uneconomical because of the independence of the four complex and fragmented functions which comprise it. Crude oil exploration, trading, transportation, and refining are functions which may be integrated through unified decision-making facilitated by timely information exchange. This exchange has been problematic because the four business u...
متن کاملOccurrence and Distribution of Chrysene and its Derivatives in Crude Oils and Source Rock Extracts from Niger Delta, Nigeria
Crude oils and source rocks from the northern and offshore Niger Delta basin, Nigeria, have been characterized by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in terms of their origin and thermal maturity based on the distribution of chrysene and its derivatives. The crude oils and source rocks were characterized by the dominance of chrysene over benzo[a]anthracene. 3-methylchrysene predominated over o...
متن کاملAcute toxicity of birch tar oil on aquatic organisms
Birch tar oil (BTO) is a by-product of processing birch wood in a pyrolysis system. Accumulating evidence suggests the suitability of BTO as a biocide or repellent in terrestrial environments for the control of weeds, insects, molluscs and rodents. Once applied as biocide, BTO may end up, either through run-off or leaching, in aquatic systems and may have adverse effects on non-target organisms...
متن کاملOccurrence and Distribution of Pyrene and its Derivatives in Crude Oils and Source Rock Extracts from Niger Delta, Nigeria
Crude oils and source rocks from the Northern and offshore depobelts of the Niger Delta basin, Nigeria have been characterized based on the distribution of pyrene and its derivatives by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Moreover, the crude oils have been characterized by the dominance of pyrene over fluoranthene while fluoranthene generally predominated over pyrene in the rock samples. Also...
متن کاملA Review on Crude Oil Fouling and Mitigation Methods in Pre-heat Trains of Iranian Oil Refineries
Crude oil fouling of the equipment surfaces is a troublesome issue which leads to operating difficulties, economic penalties, increased environmental impacts, and health and safety hazards in petroleum industry. With a rough estimation, a minimum cost of equal to 4 million barrels of oil/year is required to be invested to offset the costs of crude oil fouling in Pre-heat Trains of Iranian oil r...
